Smash Silence was formed in early 2006 by Nick Herrmann and Ollie Lang in their hometown of Reading, England, where they are known for their energetic, theatrical live performances and the peculiar instruments they take on stage.
With three EPs and one 11 track LP already under their belt, the duo have recently finished their second album. It is entitled Broke Folk, which is also the name they have given to the type of music that they play. Nick describes the genre of Broke Folk as, "A kind of folky sound but also with elements of electro, blues, reggae and rock 'n' roll. We also try and use a variety of different instruments to give our music a more eclectic feel. I like the mandolin."
When asked about their influences, Ollie replies with the frustrating answer of, "Anything and everything", so Nick helpfully expands with, "Yeah." But, after a short silence, continues, "The people who immediately come to mind are the two Bobs [Dylan and Marley]. Oh, and we both like Radiohead and Rage Against The Machine. And I read a lot of Kerouac." That's quite a spectrum.
Now, after a year of busking, travelling to their musical Meccas of Eastern Europe and New York and absorbing influences at countless festivals, concerts and bars, they're BACK.
The new album builds on the strongest elements of Smash Silence's style and expresses a constant striving for new rhythms, textures and melodies. More mature vocals with greater range, as well as a more ambitious collection of instruments, complement the sometimes soulful, sometimes uplifting tunes. The band's song-writing has also developed since Insult to Injury (their first album), with more lyrical contribution from Lang, resulting in Smash Silence's 13 strongest songs - songs that echo across the space between melancholia and joy.
Get ready for life, love, lust, luck, gloom and sparkle, foot-tapping, finger-snapping and hand-clapping. Their catchy melodies and insane rhythms will overpower you like a kick in the teeth. -
